Omicron has created uncertainty for everyone this winter, and parents may be especially confused over how to navigate the needs of their children with the risks of this new, highly infectious variant. This can be especially perplexing for families with children who are too young to be vaccinated or are only partially vaccinated.

We asked two experts — Jennifer Nuzzo and Dr. Peter Hotez — to answer a few common questions about dealing with Omicron over the holidays with children.

"Omicron doesn't fundamentally change how we protect ourselves. But it will increase the probability that you and your family members will be exposed to the virus as the level of infection in communities increases," writes Dr. Nuzzo. "But the measures we take to protect ourselves from the virus remain the same."

Omicron is highly contagious, and depending on their situations, people will make different choices for how to manage the disruptions that the variant will create in the coming weeks. There may not be ways to ensure every situation is safe from infection, but as Nuzzo and Hotez write, the tools we have relied on for months can reduce risk, like ensuring eligible children and adults are vaccinated and boosted, that people get tested and use other precautions like wearing masks and opening windows and doors to increase ventilation.

None of us wanted to relive another holiday season in the shadow of Covid-19, but Omicron is here and we can take precautions to keep our loved ones safe.
